At 2919m (9570ft) Mt Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. Its part of the mountain chain that runs through the east Greek coast, north to Bulgaria and south to Turkey.
According to the Greek mythology, it was a place where Gaia gave birth to the Titans who were so huge that they used the Greek mountains as their thrones. The most powerful of the Titans – Chronos had his throne on Mt Olympus.
Later on, it was the home of the principal gods in the Greek pantheon, who lived in their crystal palaces on the summit, eating nectar and ambrosia which gave them immortality.
Alexander the Great came here to make sacrifices before going into war, and today you can visit the museum and the archeological park on that location.
If you’re planning to take a hike to the summit it will take you two days to go up and back (one day for the experienced hikers) , but there are refuges along your path in which to spend the night. An extraordinary adventure and a touch of the ancient Greek mythology await the biggest fans of the theme.
