Sigiriya which once was the capital of Sri Lanka was built during the reign of King Kassyapa (477-495 AD) , and is a fascinating example of the early architecture and engineering achievements.
The fortress of Sigiriya is an enormous rock structure built in a form of a giant lion, but only the paws are what remain today at its entrance. Still its outline dominates the surrounding jungle covered plains.
It features an astonishing complex of gardens, fountains and buildings, and a great example of the early hydraulics which provided drainage, erosion control, cooling systems and recreational water features. The water supplies operated through gravity and pressure and are still operational even today.
To the north is the Pidurangala rock with a Buddhist monastery, and cave temples.
Throughout the world, the Sigiriya Fortress is known as the eight wonder of the ancient world.
