In the centre of Penang, the oldest British settlement in Malaysia, one can find an escape from the tropical heats and rush of Georgetown to the lush green of the Penang Hill.
In the 18th century it was the base of the East India Company, where the repairs and anchoring of the ships took place.
With a help of Swiss engineers a funicular railway was built in the year 1923, to help the people shorten their trip through tropical forest, creepers nad cascading flowering trees in order to enjoy the amazing views of the town, whole island and even the mountains on the mainland.
To reach the top a train has to be changed halfway, right next to small hotels and guesthouses, but at the top plateau one can find a small Hindu temple, a tea kiosk, restaurants, souvenir stalls and a mosque.
The old Bellevue hotel dating from 1930's, situated in the garden with a bird sanctuary, is also worth the ride.
For the ones feeling adventorous the Canopy walk is the right thing to do! At the Canopy Walk you can stay as long as you want and take a rest at every tree until you pass the total lenght of 150meters.
For the older ones or the tired ones a 4-wheel drive can be bought in order to get you back to the start. All in all a great place to rest and get tired positively enjoying the nature!
