Gwalior

The city of Gwalior is an ancient site of the Jain worship in north India. Its strategic location in the north region of Gird made it the center of several India’s historic kingdoms. The most notable part of the city is its fortress and palaces.

The Gwalior fortress is located on a sandstone outcrop and surrounded by high walls. The fort is surrounded by a rampart and statues of the Jain tirthankaras (enlightened Jain worshippers).

The fort is full of marvelous medieval architecture including Gujari Mahal converted to an Archaeological Museum. This monument also houses the statue of Shalbhanjika from Gyraspur, the tree goddess.

There is also the Man Mandir Pallace also as a great example of the early Hindu architecture in India. Its vast rooms give example of the elegance of the past times, and under it the dark dungeons were home for many state prisoners.
